    The republican nominee was Susan Colins and she performed horribly with something like 22 or 23% of the vote in the 3-way race, miles behind King and the Dem.

      Brennan was fairly uninspiring, but almost pulled it out. Also the  Bangor paper polling headlines said it was all wrapped up for Brennan the weekend before the election, so a number of progressives including me voted for Carter at the last minute.  This was two years after Ross Perot bested GHW Bush for second in the presidential.
