  •  We've been re-fighting Vietnam for a long time. (0+ / 0-)

Who went, who didn't, why they went, why they stayed behind, all of it.

Nobody who wasn't alive then gives a fuck.

    As to your second point...

The phenonmenon you're describing has nothing to do with the "military industrial complex". It's built into us. Very few cultures have ever been immune, and the few that were were either so isolated as to have nobody to feel superior to, or lived in environments so hostile as to make the land itself the only enemy worth fighting.

"Let's go fuck all their women and take all their shit" goes back much, much farther than the 1960s, and there are basically no reasons to expect it to go away.

That's not a value judgement, by the way. The world pays no attention to human ethical concerns.

has more to do with your age than "series of Baby Boomer pissing matches?"

Might be hard for you to believe this, but this isn't a forty-plus year internal Boomer fight.  It's a cynically manipulated political fight that began two decades after the Vietnam War.  Specifically when Clinton ran for President in 1992.  The "draft dodger" vs. the "WWII vet."  Replayed in 1996.  Both parties kept it alive in 2000 -- TANG guy vs. Viet Vet.  Replayed in 2004.  2008 -- Viet Vet/POW vs. ?

Most of those alive back then did give a fuck about these stupid, delayed pissing contests either.  However, those that remembered the real war also knew better than to trot off to Iraq and Afghanistan.  Alas, those that live on the cartoon versions of war made the decision.

      •  It goes back farther than Clinton. (0+ / 0-)

True, that was the first election in which one of the candidates was from the generation that fought the war. But before that, there was a lot of "liberals lost the war" and the like.

"Morning in America" would not have had the persuasive power that it did without an already existing "night" before it. And that darkness was all about Vietnam, and the various reactions to it.

The first Iraq war would not have been as popular as it was without its aura of "repaying" our defeat in Vietnam.

Bottom line, that chapter in our history is closing, in the sense that those arguments no longer have much power.

I think it's also significant that the Vietnam generation has had such a short run at the top of our political system. Only two Presidents from that cohort, even though it was the longest war we'd fought until (I think) last year. We had WWII presidents from 1952 until 1992.

          appropos.

those that forget history are doomed to repeat it.

the significance of the boomer generation is NOT just about viet nam (unless you want to discount civil rights, women's rights, breaking the glass ceiling and so much more.

          wow.

i am stunned how the generation that followed mine is so resentful of us.  yours isn't the first comment i've read around here disparaging the entire boomer generation... and, it boggles the mind to think that you haven't realized what the boomers did for this country and how we opened those doors that you now freely walk through with our bodies and determination for a better world - for YOU.

          •  Only the first half of the Boomer generation (0+ / 0-)

did those things you list.  The second half hated the first half and turned into people like Bachmann and Santorum.

            •  they were't boomers... trust me! (0+ / 0-)

at 66, almost 67 - i am the first year of the boomers (babies born after the end of wwI).

he is the fringe end of the boomer and grew up in the aftermath - able to enjoy every freedom we pushed through without the heavy lifting.  in other words, the likes of santorum and bachmann are freeloaders.  they are lazy because they took advantage of the benefits without participating in obtaining those rights and opportunities - then they friggin' whine about us?

              ugh.

        •  To date, not one POTUS born 1925-1945. (0+ / 0-)

So, if you want to talk about a "loser" generation, might as well start with that one.
