  •  Both wimped out in 2012... (0+ / 0-)

But I agree with the sentiment - both don't deserve another kick at the can.   They're chickens.

And they're still the 2 most viable options if Collins retires.

I don't think we should let either one be forced to the sidelines if a 2014 open seat comes about (or if one runs against Collins, all the gutsier).

At least everyone will be prepared for this next time, which clearly wasn't the case this time around.

      •  If Pingree and King (5+ / 0-)

are good friends, which I gather they are, and King does go to the Senate and doesn't turn out to be a nightmare for the Democrats, he might be a big help to Pingree in a run against Collins. Pingree is popular in Maine, isn't that so? King is also popular in Maine, and if his popularity grows while in the Senate, he just may endorse and campaign for Pingree in 2014. Does that sound like a plausible scenario?

Right now King seems to be a pig-in-the-poke for Maine's Democrats. If he's elected, and popular wisdom is he will be, better to curry his favor for now. Chances of electing a progressive appear slim. Not supporting King could result in a TP/GOP Senator playing havoc in D.C. At 68 this man may not be more than a one termer.

We've got worse characters as Democrats in the Senate right now. The weasel from West Virginia, Manchin, comes immediately to mind. I think with King, unless it's certain a Democrat can beat him handily, (and it's not), then perhaps we should try to make the best of a bad situation. I'd rather spend more time and money getting Elizabeth Warren to replace Brown than wasting money trying to beat King. Warren is a long term goal, King is good for 6 maybe 12 years max.

    •  obviously you are not a Maine Dem. (7+ / 0-)

they did the right thing. After getting Gov 38% we Mainers know better than to split the progressive/moderate vote. Michaud and Pingree truly care more about Maine and the country than personal achievement.
