    Why is she being "forced" to retire?  She won as a freaking write-in candidate (against the GOP Tea Partier and a random Democrat).  She's about as secure in her seat a senator can be.  She certainly can't be "forced" to retire!

    Minority rights should never be subject to majority vote.

    •  The timing between her vote standing up (5+ / 0-)

      to the rethugs and her announcing her retirement was NOT coincidental.  She knew the party would crucify for that vote and she'd have the support of no one in the party from her on in.  That's how they've managed to keep their members in such a lock tight step for so long.  They'd have fought tooth and nail to get her beat and if she didn't get beat, she'd have been sidelined.  That's the way they work and she well knew it.  So it was a choice between going along with them, standing up to them and yet resigning, or standing up to them and having her life be made miserable until she gave up and retired or was beaten.   She choose the second option.
