Rush (“fucking asshole”) Limbaugh has the right to say whatever he wants. And the American Nazi Party has the right to march in Skokie. And people everywhere have the right to say that Rush and the Nazis are assholes. That is definition of “freedom of speech.”

To me, “censorship” means some sort of government control over speech that the government doesn’t like.  In other words, it only counts as censorship if the government is doing it. Only the government can be accused of censorship.

There are two ways the government can censor speech: before the fact or after the fact.

Either (before the fact of publishing) they force all newspapers or magazines or TV shows or websites or whatever to submit their work to a censor for approval. You can’t say anything unless a censor gives you the imprimatur. The only things you can publish have to be pre-approved by some censor.

Or, the other form of censorship (after the utterance): If you say something that offends the government, they might prosecute you for some crime. They might call it “offenses against the government” or “insulting the king” or “publishing secrets” or “creating disorderly thoughts” or “hooliganism.” This is the more insidious form of censorship. You say something, then you get tossed in jail.

    What isn’t censorship

If your mother says, “Stop cussing and stop taking the Lord’s name in vain, dear,” then it isn’t censorship (because your mom isn’t the government).

If you are a comedian and you’re performing in Des Moines at F. U. Chucklefuck’s Comedy Conundrum and the owner of the club says, “Don’t do that joke about abortion,” then it isn’t censorship. That guy isn’t the government. And he’s paying you to perform. He owns the club. If you don’t follow his rules, you won’t get paid. Definitely not censorship.

If you are some right-wing asshole and you come to Daily Kos and write a diary about Ron Paul or Ayn Rand and you get hide-rated, that’s not censorship. There are plenty of other websites that would welcome your opinions. Why not go to one of them? It’s not censorship because it’s not the government telling you to go fuck yourself in the fucking fuckhole.

On the other hand, I’m very much in favor of shouting at Rush.  We should spew our hatred at him. And we should boycott his advertisers. And  contact his radio stations. We should make his life miserable as much as we can. But we shouldn’t censor him.

But the angle said to them, "Do not be Alfred. A sailor has been born to you"
