    I'm a proud lifelong southerner and staunch liberal too, as is most of my family.  For me northern right-wingers who come down here to campaign with zero real knowledge of the regional culture or people are every bit as offensive as the George Wallace southern racist types.

      I live in Connecticut these days but to my mind the Republican Party has created major obstacles to progress in the South.

      While I never forgave Wallace, even he came to realize the value of black voters. The Republicans have simply written them off. If we're lucky it will come back and bite them in the ass when progressive whites and blacks can take charge.

        Granted, some southern states have implemented extremely anti-immigrant legislation to try and stem the flow, but the Hispanic population is still soaring in much of the south.  The GOP has effectively given up on that bloc of voters, which will one day (and to some extent already it) become a highly visible part of the democratic coalition.
