    Think: The Alaska Senate race in 2010.

    Joe Miller wins the GOP primary.

    Lisa Murkowski has a problem with that, and gets on the phone and dials up some corporate sponsorship from the oil companies.

    Result: A nearly-unprecedented write-in victory.

    The Clown Car Show of the 2012 GOP Presidential primary is actually not very funny to the Republicans because it is a metastasizing of the exact same thing:

    Anyone with a friend with some serious moneybags can play.

    There's no such animal as a viable mass political party in such a scenario.

    Contrary to popular myth, superlatively rich people don't like other superlatively rich people enough to band together - because predators don't hang out like that.

    Counter-example to this being, the power that even a small cadre of said predators can wield. (See: First and Second Triumvirates, Late Roman Republic)
