  •  The Indiana law was the first, and the SCOTUS (10+ / 0-)

    upheld it.

The first time that went into effect a group of elderly nuns was denied the right to vote. The SCOTUS said that was OK.

I do wonder if the GOP is cutting off their nose to spite their face on this. Most elderly voters, except for poor ones, vote Republican these days. Those who don't drive anymore, including middle-class elderly folks, no longer need drivers licenses.

So their most reliable voters won't be voting Republican this year.

(Although I do realize that it hurts them more than it hurts us.)

    •  That's what I'm thinking, too (5+ / 0-)

I know some FDR Democrats will be disenfranchised...but a whole lot of GOP voters will also.

In PA, it's currently $10 for a non-driving state ID, but of course costs more to get your paperwork in order.  I think, for a much larger fee, there are places that will get your paperwork in order FOR you, as long as you used to have a driver's license and all that info is in the computer system.  A poll tax, yes.  And inconvenient besides.

I honestly don't know whether PA has a voter ID law yet.  I thought we did; then I read it was still being voted on; but I have my state-issued ID.

Forget voting: you can't get a goddamn job without one anymore.  They make you prove you are NOT an illegal alien.

I call him Rick Scumtorum because he IS scum: pond scum, with the brain of an alga.

Anything that harms the ability of people to vote is harmful to the democratic process and thus harmful to all of us.  An injury to one is an injury to us all.

    •  I heard a snippet (on Hartmann/Rhodes?) about (0+ / 0-)

a lifetime elderly R voter denied at the polls in one of the southern states on Repub Super Tuesday.  Just like the woman in diary - voted in hometown for decades, denied by new ID laws.

Keep it up, Repubs.  You'll be down to your ultra-white Tea Party dregs soon.

To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. - Theodore Roosevelt 1918
