The only difference between a Conservative pundit and Wormtongue is that Sauron never had the lobbyists Bank of America can afford.
MoT, thanks,  really needed the laughs.

Grima Wormtongue actually served.  At Saruman's bidding, Wormtongue went and poisoned the mind of the king of the Rohirrim, King Theoden, causing him to banish his most loyal relatives and soldiers, and helping him sink into a despair that there was no hope in resisting the forces of evil.  It took Gandalf to break the spell, banish Wormtongue back to his master and ultimately, led to Wormtongue killing Saruman.  Oops - spoiler alert!

Sauron was the lord in Mordor, and he had captured and twisted the mind of Saruman, but Saruman still held out hope he could challenge Sauron for supremacy of Middle Earth.  In the end, he lost to a coalition of freedom loving races, most especially the Ents and the Rohirrim.  Sauron's forces were brought down by the grand coalition of men, dwarves, the Rohirrim, elves, an ancient kingdom of the dead and, of course, the fellowship of the Ring, which included four hobbits.

You would think a name like 'Wormtongue' would have been a tip off that the guy was not to be trusted.

"Wormtongue" was named Grima. Wormtongue was the name given to him by Theoden's other advisors whom Grima systematically (using the powers of Saruman) disgraced and replaced. And it was the power of Saruman which really turned Theoden's mind and heart against his own relatives and advisors, and which only the power of Gandalf the White could break. Grima could have been called "Look at me, I'm lying," and it probably would not have mattered.

Remember, Karl Rove was called "Turd Blossom" by his very own Theoden, Dumbya (though Dumbya had no honor or valor, unlike Theoden). In either case, it didn't seem to matter to the national press who clearly WANTED to be lied to and deceived.

See? I can be just as pedantically doctrinaire about LOTR as anyone else. AND tie it in to modern American politics.

Those board gigs are awesome -- four luxury-catered meetings a year and a cool half million in compensation.   Good work if you can get it!
