  •  Yes. His father lives there. (11+ / 0-)

Where the store is in relation to the gate, I don't know.

Either way, being in a gated community does not give one a free pass to gun one down for being black.

    •  I thought that was the point of gated communities (0+ / 0-)

There is truth on all sides. The question is how much.

is that there is a guard on hand to verify and allow access to residents and guests.  If the 17 year old's family did not live in the gated community, that would diminish the youth's validity for being in the community.  That wouldn't give a neighborhood watch volunteer license to shoot, but it would change the circumstances from one in which, as it turns out, the youth was returning to his family's home.

      •  Often, these days, gated only means (0+ / 0-)

that there is a gate. Residents may have a pass code to open the gate, but there may be no guard.

My mother's apartment bills itself as a "gated community" because it has a guard shack and used to have a gate. There is no guard, and no longer a gate. They had set it up so that people visiting would state the person's phone number, and the guard would punch it into a computer. It would call that person, and that person would approve entry.

That was right about the time people started using cell phones instead of land lines, so their system stopped working (didn't work on cell phones) So, instead of fixing the system, they just got rid of it. But still calls themselves a gated community. :eyeroll:

      •  No. The youth's validity was 100% legit (2+ / 0-)

the moment his family exchanged money for the property within that community.

Same with every single other person within that gate.

Doesn't matter if one person paid in full forever to live there or if one person paid for one day... they both paid to occupy space there and each has the same exact rights as the other.

The shooter is a cold-blooded murderer and every single person in that gated community is just another opportunity for him to go ballistic and murder another human being.

Whiteness doesn't protect your ass at all times in all circumstances. So they needn't get up on their high horses because it can easily bite one of them.
