Thank you so much for this. Your work is excellent -- and it figures that you would have great illustrations as well!

I'm sorry I missed it last night, but I was half-asleep when I scanned the diary list after a long day on the road, and I skipped right over this.

I remember this "historic" match, and the one thing I remember most is that if it was such a big deal, WHY did they hold it on a THURSDAY night?

Probably because the Astrodome was booked with football games on Friday and Saturday, it being football season in Texas. I was living in a little town in Texas back then, and we watched it on a portable TV in the stands while our high school's junior varsity football game was going on in front of us.

If it was such high stakes, high dollar stuff for the times, why didn't they broadcast it on a weekend night? Probably because they figured ratings for a mere woman playing tennis wouldn't make it worth their while.

Anyway, thanks for this great blast from my past. I like tennis, but I was never coordinated enough to play well. I do like watching, but I'd rather watch the guys -- and not just because Rafa Nadal is a breathtakingly beautiful man, but because I get tired of hearing the women grunt. It adds nothing to the game, and several of them have admitted it's merely an intimidation factor. I wish they'd stop it.

    Tipped, rec'd and bookmarked.
