  •  This is just part of what I intend to write on (3+ / 0-)

the subject.  I used to let religion be, believing people have a right to believe what they want, but now I have come to decide that they are actively working against the good of all people, and I cannot in all good conscience let it stand.  I will soon have a diary on why people say they go to church or belong to a religion.

i used to just be merely contemptuous; now i'm outright hostile to religion, for the same reasons you state.  the climate change/science denialism is a big fat bridge too far.

    •  The totality of everything is inexplicable. (1+ / 0-)

Consciousness itself is inexplicable. We are all involved together in a process we call life, that we do not fully understand, in a place we call the universe, about which we know very little. One day soon we are all going to die. No one, not even the sharpest scientist on the block, knows what any of it means. Is it any wonder that we invent religions?

True, they are powerful and have always been so. If they were far less powerful than they are, we would all be far better off. But the fundamental human need for religion (however it might be defined) is as old as humanity itself. It's not going away anytime soon.
