  •  One encouraging thing is mfg is coming back (4+ / 0-)

There is a real shortage of skilled people to work in manufacturing.  We hire apprentices from the technical high school while they are still in high school.  They go through an 8000 hour training curriculum.

Our apprentices are doing much better financially than most of their peers - college grads or not.  We have to have an economy that works for all people and all levels of education and ability.

Education cannot simply be about encouraging gifted students to excel.  Society must make a place for all.  We cannot simply ignore large swathes of citizens.

That was my point - not every person in college bound, nor has our country been particularly well-served by the continual push that every single child must go to college.  It has created a whole generation that "looks down their nose" at manufacturing as a legitimate career choice resulting in massive gaps between jobs and skilled people to fill them.

We pay a very good wage to these apprentices and will even pay for continuing education.
