    niche left unpopulated. Those phytoplankton consume a lot of resources to emit that oxygen. I suspect some other creature will come along which also consumes those resources.

      niche at a speech rapid enough to seamlessly take up the lack from the crashing phytoplankton, if we are to have enough oxygen to breathe.

      a crash, followed by a drop in oxygen, followed by an eventual bloom of whatever fills that niche will not be of much help to many organisms alive in the trough of oxygen production, ourselves included.
