  •  As a snooty NY/NJ - er (2+ / 0-)

The public transit in general in Portland and even to the burbs and beaches of Oregon, was muy impressive (just as efficient as NY and uh, a tad cleaner... :) and extremely helpful to me during my visit to the city (though I can easily walk the whole length of the main part of the city without breaking a sweat -it's a cute small town :).

The fareless square is a great business/tourism innovation as others mentioned above and should also be emulated everywhere.

I was actually scouting Portland for potential relocation and loved everything about the city (liberal paradise!  a retirement home for 30-somethings!), during my two weeks out there last summer, but the one deal-breaker was the cold beaches when I hit the coast.

I do miss the food carts though.

The best part of the light rail though is how it inspired my 6 year old niece, who is still a bit confused by the whole "stranger danger" / people just being nice thing, to write a song called "I don't intend to know you"

    •  Oh good, I have a food cart diary coming up! (1+ / 0-)

You have exactly 10 seconds to change that look of disgusting pity into one of enormous respect!

So maybe Portland will get on the bandwagon too.

      •  Haha, Portland is the bandwagon (1+ / 0-)

Everywhere you walk in the main part of the city (sorry locals, I confused all the "sections" names), there are food truck malls in empty parking lot/parks with anywhere from 10 - 30 different choices.  The quality was amazing... I had some Belgian style fries at one that definitely were competitive with the best I had in NY.

Oh, also Portlanders and visitors should check out Sizzle Pie (my friend and former boss's pizza restaurant)!  When I wasn't eating at the food carts or Voodoo Donuts, I was grabbing a slice or five at Sizzle Pie.

Portland is Mecca for food carts in the United States.

So I'm a bit confused by your comment.
