If they accept you, they've got your back.

The invasion of Iraq was a war crime, a crime against humanity, and a crime against civilization. Prosecute the crime.

as long as they like you.  When they decide they don't, they'll kill you (figuratively) and sometimes literally.

I can relate to this.  I'm black from New York, but my grandparents had a farm in Virginia where I spent part of my summers growing up in the 60s.

Despite the vicious institutional racism, southern white people were incredibly friendly.  In a weird way, racism wasn't personal the way it was in the north.  It's not that they hated black people as people and neighbors; heck, they had black housekeepers, nannies and even wet nurses.  They just wanted the system to stay the same and for black people to know their place.

In the north, the racism was personal.  Northern racists hate the black person in part because they are ignorant of them as fellow humans.

When I grew up, I had the weird experience of meeting an Indian-American (ie South Asian) guy in Africa who had grown up in the part of Virginia my family was from.  His family had been treated as being white, so he knew the white community well.  He told me the story of an elderly white lady who only referred to black people as "niggers" in private, but when any black neighbors were sick, she went over to help with the cooking, cleaning and nursing, and they did the same for her.

Utterly bizarre culture.  But you know the white South African rural Afrikaners are very similar.  I once went to a black wedding in rural South Africa and the one white guest was the groom's "baas" and he gave an apparently hilarious speech in fluent Zulu that had everyone laughing.  I don't speak Zulu, but from what I was told his Zulu was so good that his jokes were full of clever puns.

Makes sense because most Afrikaner farm boys are assigned a black boy to play with for their childhoods and often speak an African language as fluently as Afrikaans.
