this was a big part of what clark tried to do last year. he just wasn't ready for prime time, but his instinct was to push back hard against all the slime and smears--and to call the country to its own better nature. hence "dissent is patriotic," the one talking point of his that made me proudest to support him.

based on the diary that has been front-paged since i saw it earlier today, he's hitting those same notes now, and seems like he's more in tune.

i think kerry's instinct was to do this as well, but he didn't have the message discipline to slam the point home day after day after day--which is what it will take, at this late point.

    •  Clark used word "Extremist" in LA... (none)
...yesterday. Can't we just substitute that for "unAmerican" in this diary.
I think almost always using 'extremist' (peppered heavily with 'unAmerican') would be the way to play it.
Too many of us are post Joe McCarthy. 'unAmerican' (even though that nails it) just conjures up that association.
There are a whole lot of us baby boomers still around and voting.

Like you said, Unamerican nails it. Why on earth use another word that, while also accurate, is not as strong.

As to McCarthy. That is not lost on anyone and adds more impact to the word.
