"Dahlia Lithwick reported recently in Slate on the proposed law in Virginia that, as originally written, would have made it legal to penetrate abortion-seeking women against their will by requiring a medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound procedure. The procedure would count as rape under state law. Del. David Englin told Ms. Lithwick that one Republican lawmaker told him that the invasive ultrasound wasn't an issue because women seeking abortions had already made the decision to be "vaginally penetrated when they got pregnant." Apparently, once women have been penetrated, all other future penetrations should be no problem, consent notwithstanding."

"Why do you think it's okay to rape pregnant women?"

note: I don't ask "Do you think it's okay to rape pregnant women?" because the first question presupposes that they believe it is.  If they actually believe it is, or they want to push your buttons, they'll answer the question.

If they don't actually believe, they'll have to backtrack just to address the presupposition, because answering the question accepts the presupposition.  This puts them on the defensive much more effectively, because it sets them up for the trap, where you explain why that statement means that it is okay to rape pregnant women.  (Or, with little extension, any women who's ever had sex, been raped, or masturbated, etc.)

I usually follow up with something about sometimes what people on TV/radio say sounds catchy, but it's really bad if you stop to think about it.  It defuses people's defensiveness, and it also puts the burden of blame where it really belongs.
