  •  "anti-Catholic votes"? (9+ / 0-)

Protestant fundamentalists like Santorum; Catholic voters don't. His ideas and rhetoric are not mainstream Catholic at all, but amount to a fringe conservative Catholicism which, in the US anyway, is apparently cross-pollinated by Protestant fundamentalism.

    •  I don't understand Santorum's appeal (1+ / 0-)

to white evangelicals in the South. I thought they didn't like Catholics.

How does his appeal work with them?

      (It's crazier than I thought!)

Evangelicals got their anti-abortion stance from Catholics: that was originally a Catholic, not an evangelical thing, since there's nothing in the Bible supporting the idea that abortion is wrong. The Catholic church made up the idea that abortion goes against Christianity a little over a century ago.

Anyway, evangelicals (fundamentalists, to be more precise) understand that conservative Catholics like Santorum are on their side in the culture wars. So there's been a curious realignment.

Put simply, he hates all the right people and that is one thing that can bring people together down here.  Once they get rid of all the gays and liberals and anti-choice and blacks and hispanics and feminists and, well, everyone except fundamentalist christians, they'll turn on Rick, too.  But, right now, they hate everyone else more than they hate each other.

      •  They are moralistic and so is he. That trumps (0+ / 0-)

        religion.

Romney's not doing that badly either. They will flock to him, if he is the final choice against Obama.

Progressives will win when we convince a majority that they, too, are Progressive.
