    the best way to refute a position is simply to ask for the evidence for the assertion, then state your own position.

    When asked for evidence the Republicans struggle, because it doesn't exist anywhere except inside their heads. Stating your own position allows them to ask you for evidence, most of which is readily to hand.

    "Which regulations would you repeal? What Government Departments would you shut down, and why?"

    I get so fed up of hearing about "small government" with no suggestion as to how that might happen.

    "Which regulations did Bush repeal? Was government smaller under Bush than under Clinton?"

    You get the drift.

    I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
    but I fear we will remain Democrats.
