    the wall, I would cite the Republican Taft Hartley Act of 1947.  By the 1970s, private sector unions were too weak (and when the once powerful become weak, higher levels of corruption filter in) to serve as a counterpoint to the corporate elite and the New Deal politicians were dying off.
