  •  A timely reminder that police forces in the US (6+ / 0-)

    have been aggressively recruiting combat vets since the 1st gulf war, following 10 years in which police forces fattened themselves on seizures / sales of "guilty" (ie, 'crime-related/ill-gotten) money & property, which they turned (largely) into superfluous SWAT teams...and have since "upgraded" with all that anti-"terrorist" money.

    The Framers of the Constitution were firmly opposed to a standing army because they felt that such an army would insist, eventually, on being used (the original slippery-slope argument, perhaps);  we've seen their fears justified.  I would say there is every reason to apply the same distrust to a militarized police force:  if the citizens can no longer resist the government, the community is at risk.
