Medicare is great, especially since it is guaranteed coverage. But it's not superior to FED insurance or state insurance, and sometimes not to even any ol' next employer's coverage. And that speaks to the crazy, unfair insurance industry, not to any fault in Medicare which I believe saves lives.

When some older folks I know were retiring, they were forced to trade their old coverage for medicare even though they were still working.  Their insurers initiated the transfers from employer coverage to medicare.

Recently a senior I know was asked to take a specific diagnostic test and when presented with a 200 dollar price tag, decided not to have the test complaining,  "I was never charged for this test before"  and then launching into a rant about medicare.

I asked if they had applied for additional coverage through a private insurer...  nope that was too expensive.

I can't imagine how they'd fare with private 'senior' insurance. I just went through a billing nightmare with a private insurer a few years ago. How about NO forewarning of the expense and the DR won't even give you an estimate because - "hey that's your insurance- not mine, but these are the tests and treatments I'm ordering. If you can't comply ('afford them'), I can't help you."
