  •  understood, but kids will be kids... (7+ / 0-)

... and when I was a kid, we did what I described above.

We also knew that frogs in particular absorbed water through their skin so we only handled them with clean hands that were well-rinsed in plain water.

And the funny thing is, we got to know their individual markings pretty well, so for example we'd release a given individual green frog, and then a couple of weeks later catch exactly the same one again.  When that happened we'd let those individuals go immediately, because they'd already had one round of life in the terrarium, which was enough.

We also had toads in the yard that were recognizable from one season to the next due to unusual markings.  Those we'd keep for a couple of days and then release in the yard again in the evening.

And the thought of treating any of this wildlife cruelly was beyond the pale.  We even had derogatory slang names for people based on that.

This was decades ago when it was normal for kids to run around un-supervised in the woods.  Today with suburban over-development, "helicopter parenting," and too many toys with screens, I despair that most kids never get to find out about living with nature out their back door.

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.
