Has Dolan been rebuked by the Vatican for this?

Please, I'd love to know how you can possibly maintain that the president of the USCCB doesn't speak for the Catholic Church.

    •  The church is the people, not the (0+ / 0-)

bishops.  That's always been true, and it has become increasingly true as the church moves into modernity over the last 200 years.

You're kidding, right?  The RCC isn't moving into modernity by any stretch.

And while it sounds good in theory to claim that "the church is the people, not the bishops," it's blinking at reality to claim that that's how it works in practice.  The members of the church don't get a say in how dogma is set.  The RCC is a top-down institution.  That's why most American Catholics choose not to follow many of their church's teachings.  The hierarchy's war on a woman's right to control her own body doesn't seem to be garnering much support from actual Catholics, but that doesn't mean the war isn't being waged, and it doesn't mean the church's resources aren't being used to wage it.

So you can continue to live in denial about the evil your church is doing in the world, or you can own up to its flaws.  The latter course is certainly the more difficult one, as it would mean you'd have to own up to your own implicit support of what your church's hierarchy is up to.  But however difficult it may be, it's the only way to be honest about this, and it's the only choice that comports with reality.
