Don't bother with the elipses. What I meant was that, at least superficially, there appears to be an affective link or affinity between public performances of morality and a far more tumultuous psychic life. People who are comfortable with themselves, broadly construed, don't seem to need to impress their moral positions on others.

It's not that your attempt failed to clarify. It actually succeeded in confirming that you tend to equate mental health issues with some degree of moral failure. I hope you will rethink that position.

You're reading a generalization into something that I'm discussing very particularly.

I'm familiar with affect theory and actor-perfomer ideas, as well as these particular claims. It sounds a bit like the notions of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick as well? I read you as someone versed in Critical Theory?

Not necessarily with Eve Sedgwick, but I've read her work and am sympathetic to it. Check out Brian Massumi's "Parables for the Virtual" and Lauren Berlant, Sara Ahmed. Or go read Spinoza! Via Deleuze.

              •  Yes! Spinoza... I've recently been reading (0+ / 0-)

him a bit more recently, and also do work with D&G a fair amount. Thank you for the recommendations. I thought I recognized the discourse here and have only seen it come up a few times, so I admit that it delights me to see! Also, I better understand your particular claim in context of this and would draw a strong distinction between moralizing and the critical distinction which you were making.

                Nice to meet you! :)
