Aussie shepherd, is also gone at 16.   She was nearly ten when we got her from a family that couldn't keep her any longer.  Even beyond ten, she would pull me up the street, straining the leash as I walked her.  And she would run her heart out chasing (oops, I mean, "herding") other dogs in the park.

Never needed a fence.  She would just come flop down on the back deck and wait for us to let her in.

I the past couple of years, of course, she slowed down considerably, so I was the one leading her on our walks.  Finally, there was just no get-up-and-go-left, and I had to carry her outside to do her business.  She stopped eating and couldn't stand stably on her own.

We chose to end the indignity of her worsening situation.

I have faith that she is now chasing seagulls on the beach in the Great Beyond, where she is alert and agile and four years old forever.

I wish I could hug you right this minute.  I'm sorry for the loss of your sweet Jackie.  The worst animal loss that I've ever suffered was that of a dog named Pittsburgh.  I know the slowing walks.  The carrying them outside.  The final choice...  To help them...

I know.  And my heart just aches for you.  You're in Portland.  So am I.  Our dogs ran the same beaches on the coast.  Chased the same Oregon gulls.  Rolled in the same Oregon dead things.  :-/

Pittsburgh still comes back to me in dreams.  18 years later.  I will wish for you the same comfort.

especially coming from a neighbor.  Perhaps our paths have crossed without our knowing, or may in the future.

I am sorry for the loss of your dear old kitty and know how much you must miss her.

There is a gap, for now, in our family.  Jackie's lambskin, where she used to sleep, is still by the window in our bedroom, marking her place.  He two stuffed toys, a monkey and a bear, are there remembering her.
