When powerhouse nations decline, fear of the future drives elections.  Hitler was popular with an unbelievably large number of Germans in the early '30s.  Palin is not the fuehrer--but she attracts mostly the same type.  It's not so much of a decline militarily--although terrorism is a powerful substitute-- but the thought that the third world also has flat screens and ipads.  The lure of past exclusivity makes nostalgia a tool--and leads to reactionary politicians.

    Apres Bush, le deluge.
