The intellectual wing of the Republican party has been obliterated by the results of their policies.  They've all been proven to be miserable failures.  Tax Cuts, Preemptive War, Deregulation...you name it, it has failed.  Conservatism is intellectually bankrupt.

So, rather than come up with new intellectual foundations, they've shifted to a party that is defined by its enemies rather than its tenets.  Rush Limbaugh has been THE spearhead of this movement, a movement defined by turning "liberals" into some horrible bogey man ... an enemy that must be destroyed and can never be compromised with.  That is where the conservative movement has taken itself.  We are no a hyper-polarized country with one side (the conservatives) viewing their fellow Americans as the enemy.  Their language emphasizes that fact daily on the campaign trail.

Yes, Rush Limbaugh is the absolute leader of the intellectual movement of the Republican party, but "intellectual" has been reduced to defining Democrats as their mortal enemy.  When you cannot face the reality that your conservative policies have created, then this becomes your last bastion of rhetoric.

The Rightwing has called us the enemy for so long now and with such vitriol I fear some of their followers will take it literally. And will see mass murder and terrorism as the only way to "take America back."

      •  Yes, absolutely... (0+ / 0-)

We've seen hints of it already.  Remember the guy who flew the plane into the IRS building?  I don't know how he Obama family deals with the stress of what must be constant threats.

It was his election in the first place that deranged them. If anything, a second term means "closer to the end" in their minds. I think as far as potential violence, the quotient will remain the same — high but not higher.
