  •  Panetta admits that there is "Epidemic of rape... (7+ / 0-)

...and sexual assaults in our armed forces..."

...In 2010, an estimated 19,000 service members were raped or sexually assaulted by other service members...

But the incidence of unpunished rapes will continue and so will the damaging effects these illegal acts have on troop morale and preparedness. This epidemic requires an overhaul of the military justice system...

...The military's chain of command structure keeps most cases of rape and sexual assault from reaching the prosecution level...

In the U.S. military, a woman is more likely to be raped by a co-worker than killed by the enemy...

    Very troubling.

    •  The screening process is key (9+ / 0-)

The Military doesn't create rapists. The uniform doesn't make people rape.

Chances are, they have done this before. The military however, protects them and gives them access to unprotected targets.

I served with some good people who would never ever do such things.

And then there were the others. And with those you just kept asking yourself over and over--How the fuck did they get through the Evaluations? How is it that these people are still here and not being drummed out.

Because those who did harass women, often did other things as well.

Racism, religious bigotry and misogyny often went hand in hand. Not always, but a lot of the times.
