    could be considered illegitimate was if the mother wa a habitual prostitute known to have sex with many men on a single day--in other words, someone who had no clue who was the fahter of her child.  Fathers accepted child born of a woman not their wife easily--it ws another storng arm for the clan. Oh, ans there were many categories of women who bore legitimate children including "the beloved woman not a wife." In many ways I think ancient pagan Ireland under the brehons was a better place for women than Ireland after Patrick..
