    points They make the argument that, in a broader sense, we should expand the relationships a child has both vertically and horizontally. They have that right.  I have trouble with them when they start defining the broader concept.

      My daughter was always mine. My peculiarities in raising her were respected if looked upon with curiosity. But the broader community allowed more opportunity, more socialization for her, and more support for me.

      My daughter had a strong parental component (my husband and I) and an equally strong community component (the other parents, kids, siblings, teachers). At any moment she might be at school, another parents home, my home or the community store. At all places she was watched over by people who knew her and cared for her. When guidance was given, to me more often than not, it was given gently and informally but no one would have dreamed of taking my daughter away.
