we were supposed to go to a Neurologist. Six months wait time for an appointment 80 miles away. He was the only one who took medicaid anywhere close to us. One week before his appointment, they called to say they were dropping medicaid. This went on for three years. Same cycle. Finally his Psych just made the diagnosis himself based on information I gave him about his younger years and what he'd seen himself.
Three years of missed therapies, missed early intervention education, missed admittance to the Developmentally Delayed services in this state because he didn't yet have a diagnosis. All because one Neuro after another kept dropping medicaid right before his appointment.
By the way, by the time the three years passed by, there waiting list for developmental services went from 2 years to 8. If he'd been accepted the first time he would have had services before his diagnosis. But without the diagnosis they won't provide services.
His earlier Psych kept wanting to 'rule things out' and "we don't want to label him too soon". But without the label, much as I hate labels in general, without it he was only receiving speech therapy. He completely missed out on some of the best years for therapy and intervention with an autistic child.
