  •  My school was an exemplary rural public school. No (5+ / 0-)

longer. Our supt is trying to make us typical. We will lose several sections of college level classes because our class numbers are low. students are encouraged to play sports and not participate in choir, jazz band, or debate.

Teachers seem to target the non-athletes. Too many are embarrassed that we did not have enough students out to have a football team. The solution was to cut my debate budget by 50%, and it will be cut further next year. The two time defending state jazz band has been cut too.

Obama joked about guns, God, and Gays as the way of life in rural America. It is so true. Here it is Sports, Guns, and God. Gays are not as big an issue.

Speaking truth to history might get me in trouble again, but we go through many of these issues in American Lit. I had a girl ask me the other day why we only read "black stories" in class after reading a couple of civil rights stories. I had no answer. I believe we have too many racists in our building and our 98% white community.

    It's been a tough week.

and for some kids that is their focus.  For others it will be debate, or music, or art, or even cooking.

Our public schools should be meeting the needs of ALL of our students, giving them the opportunity to explore.

      Sorry for what has happened.

We, too, are losing things, in our case because of money.
