  •  "Wave election" or not, incumbents with (0+ / 0-)

Chafee's approval rating don't lose.  Chafee himself has stated that remaining a Republican for re-election is why he lost.

    •  The wave election had everything to do with it. (0+ / 0-)

People wanted a Democratic Congress/Senate. That was why Chafee lost then while winning easily in 2000 (and of course his father, who was more conservative, won before that).

      •  You see mindless voters riding a wave -- (0+ / 0-)

I see voters that were politically savvy and astute.

        •  Mindless voters? (0+ / 0-)

That's kind of putting words in my mouth, especially since most people I know (including my parents, who are about the furthest thing in the world from "mindless") voted for Whitehouse. My point was simply that in a year when people's #1 concern was Democratic control of Congress (aka a Dem wave year), they were willing to overlook other factors that may have drawn them to Chafee.
