Just for adding IL-100 between Alton and Grafton to this. One of the most stunning midwestern drives that can be made. That is prime wintering area for bald eagles.

One of the prettiest drives in the country is along the Illinois River Road. I have many photos of the Alton bluffs like the one in this diary. And when I drive down this road, Aliota Haynes and Jeremiah comes to mind, but I change the words: There ain't no road just like it, anywhere I've found, running south on the River Road, headed into town....

our first fall living in the area, and it was just stunning. The bluffs are beautiful and the river is so wide at that point. It was a beautiful day and there were sailboats and speedboats on the water. It was idyllic.

Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. --Mark Twain

    •  We saw an eagle's nest along this stretch. (2+ / 0-)

Noticed a guy with a camera, tripod, and huge lens taking photos as we were driving past, which called our attention to the nest.  We pulled over and watched the father eagle hunt along the river and take fish back to the nest.  A pretty drive with a bonus we hadn't expected.
