By 1887, it was decided to reverse the flow of the Chicago River through civil engineering. Engineer Isham Randolph noted that a ridge about 12 miles from the lake shore divided the Mississippi River drainage system from the Great Lakes drainage system. A plan soon emerged to cut through that ridge and carry waste water away from the lake, through the Des Plaines and Illinois rivers, to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. In 1889, the Illinois General Assembly created the Sanitary District of Chicago (SDC) to carry out the plan

It may have been a surprise to the downriver folk who had cow carcarsses show up on their fields during a flood, but the reversal plan wasn't a secret.

Romney is campaigning to be President SuperBain; his cure is to cut wages, end pensions, let companies go bankrupt, and let the assets of production go dark or be sold to China. He really thinks thats the best of all possible Americas.

in the Chicago Public School System, we were taught that this was one of the "seven engineering wonders of the world" and it was a super big deal that Chicago was very proud of -- the city of big shoulders , so big and powerful that we could reverse the flow of a goddamn river if we want to.

Oh, and you forgot that they dye the river green every St. Paddy's day!

Go Bernie Sanders! You are what a politician should be!

      •  Indeed, it's the "Chicago School of Earthmoving" (0+ / 0-)

in keeping with the tendency of naming "schools" of Chicago.
