    is political, and that is to get the President to put on the table what HIS proposed fix for Medicare would be.  

    I completely agree with you on all points about Medicare being unsustainable.  Something is going to have to be done during the next Presidential term.  I think that this was an effort by Ryan and the Republicans to force the President, at some point during the upcoming campaign, to be public about his proposal for fixing the Medicare problem.  

    So far, all we know about the President's position is that he was "willing to consider cuts to Medicare" in exchange for some tax increases on the rich, during the negotiations with Speaker Boehner.  I think the President would like, if he could, not to be any more specific than that during the upcoming campaign, because no matter what he proposes (unless it is a meaningless accounting gimmick) it's going to make a lot of people unhappy.
