  •  I brought up Planned Parenthood because... (15+ / 0-)

...just a week ago, Sen. Davis publicly declared support for that organization. The connection is neither tenuous, nor geographically/temporally distant.

The "Right" thing is almost always the wrong thing.

    •  How many Dems don't support Planned Parenthood? (3+ / 0-)

It could be a pro-life radical. It could also, equally plausibly, be a war vet with some mental illness, an unemployed person with some grudge against the local/state govt., a total kook, a Republican activist, a socialist, an anarchist, someone on who knows what kind of drugs and any of the above, etc.

The problem with living in a civilized democracy in you don't go accusing your opponents of trying to kill you without some basis of proof. If you start punching holes in that wall the whole fabric of democracy crumbles.

But there'll be plenty of righteous indignation - which the vast majority of people will agree with - if this turns out to have anything to do with Planned Parenthood. But without there being so much as a note or a statement to that effect, it's just extremely dangerous in my mind to start accusing political opponents of arson and attempted murder.

Rational political discourse is fragile enough at the moment before throwing firebomb accusations after a firebombing without any kind of proof at all.

      •  war vets, unemployed people, socialists, anarchist (6+ / 0-)

don't firebomb and/or shoot at abortion clinics, politicians, churches, etc.

right wing "lone wolves" do, with increasing regularity of late. the false equivalency you desperately want to assert simply isn't grounded in reality, not for decades and decades.

        •  That's not entirely true (0+ / 0-)

I wish it were, and I thank you for the sentiment, but McVeigh was a vet. I had a friend shot by a fellow service member in a random act of violence on the economy, who was mad about libruls or some such 20 years ago.

Unfortunately until the military does a better job screening them out, we do get people who join the military from gangs and militias who just want the military tactical training.

They are a minority, but they are there.

to right wing terrorists, in an imagined sense of balance. mcveigh and the guy who shot your friend, by your own description, were coming to their acts of violence from the right.
