  •  I think this is what Obama meant (5+ / 0-)

when he said "We can disagree without being disagreeable." I was reading HuffPo a few weeks ago. They linked a story from the Austin Chronicle about prosecutorial misconduct in Texas. There were about 12 or so comments from readers. All but 1 of those comments were about how the whole state of Texas can go straight to hell. Let us secede. That there is nothing at all good about Texas. The hatred made me ill.

Funny thing was, that if you scrolled to the top of the page, there was a story about Dawna Dukes, an Austin City Council Member , who is fighting back against her church (Catholic) because they rescinded an invitation for her to speak to the congregation on Easter. They do not like her positions on reproductive rights. Another story was about the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center. Another about a community art project.

I told my boyfriend that, at this moment, I would much rather be in the company of my conservative friends and family than with those commenters who are supposed to be my ideological allies.

I can dismiss the hatred from the other side. I have a very hard time dismissing it from our side, even if it is not specifically directed at my beloved Texas.

I was born here. I intend to die here. I love my neighbors. And I will respectfully disagree with them. But I will not poison my well.

it appalls me to see such hateful anti-Texan hate that comes from many people even on this site. She is a beautiful state and turning more purple from red every year. There is a lot of bad though. Suburban sprawl, environmental destruction, and the prevalence of sundown towns that still exist in east TX. We all need to work to fix these problems, not bash the whole state as subhuman. Gerrymandered districts makes retaking the state government very difficult even in blue cities like Houston, Austin, and Dallas. People get up in arms about the abuses of local and state government in WI, but somehow it is the residents of TX fault not the state governments fault when things are going poorly in TX. Progressives should know and behave better. Keep up the good work!

      •  Yes, retaking the government is very difficult. (2+ / 0-)

I have no choice but to be represented by Repugs in the state Senate and state House.  There are literally no Democrats running for those offices.
