    This codifies for all cops something that was previously only a tendency of bad cops: to selectively believe witnesses and suspects who they identify with, and to selective enforce laws against "others." It not only lets cops turn a blind eye on white-power assassin squads, it puts a hood over those judges who might have reined in those cops.

    After the last half century of progress to delegitimize racism among those sworn to preserve peace and deliver justice, ALEC's model legislation sends the South back to the era of mobs and terror. Anyone who thinks this outcome of the law is an unfortunate side effect is both denying credit to its authors' foresight, and misjudging their intentions.
