  •  I honor you for your Diary (6+ / 0-)

and for the truth-telling you have done,  with grace.  I am beginning a new PTSD/MST group at my VA Mental Health Clinic tomorrow.  I was sexually abused as a child (by my mother) and sexually assaulted in the military.  All of that changed me. Of course your abuse changed you.  We know so much more than many others.  There is pain in knowing all of this however.  I have been in some form of counseling all of my adult life - individual, group, cognitive, psychoanalysis, etc.

You wrote eloquently.  Robertson is so full of shit.  He is a disgusting person who says ludicrous things all the time.  Pay no attention to him and the other fanatic right wing christians who have no clue.

And please join Rebecca and I as we launch our venture.

Send either of us a KosMail and we'll give you contact information.

Our stories must be told.  As you say, we know so much more than many others - and now it's time to use that knowledge to EDUCATE others.

What I've found is many try to protect children from "stranger danger" but the problem is the predator is often INSIDE the door, not outside.  Understanding what grooming behaviors look like, being able to talk to children about their bodies and appropriate touching, giving parents, teachers, administrators the tools they need to "talk" to children and get them to talk - these are some of our goals.

And I think your experience and knowledge can help us achieve our goals.

I do hope to hear from you -

    •  Good for you! (4+ / 0-)

PTSD groups are so helpful. I took this out of my diary because it was so long-but I was raped again when I was 17, and as a result I was referred to a PTSD group. It was one of the most transformative things I did-it helped immensely. I wish I had stuck it out, but I started getting closer and closer to finally opening up about the childhood abuse and that started to freak me out, so I left. I've been thinking about joining one again, but I'm uninsured at the moment.

I encourage you to read Judith Herman's book "Trauma & Recovery" (there is a link to it on my recommended diaries) She draws parallels between CSA and combat trauma-and how the two often overlap, since children from abusive homes are statistically much more likely to enlist in the military. She has proposed a framework for a new diagnostic category of PTSD for survivors of repeat trauma called C-PTSD (Complex PTSD) Unfortunately it's not in the DSM yet, but hopefully it will be soon.
