    I think it's possible that portraying unapologetic open bigotry like Mad Men does is outright harmful*, because the characters might be anti-heroes, but they're still heroes.  There seems to be some undercurrent behind shows like that that it's OK to have your characters portray repulsive attitudes, because it's all in the past and nobody actually thinks such things today.  It's not true.  So it comes off as almost the opposite of Little House style earnest-but-patronizing racial parables, but not really one iota less privileged or clueless.

    * Not harmful in the literal sense; I'm tired and having trouble figuring out how to say what I mean.
