    ...in my professional association's risk pool for health insurance.

    Health insurers increase the premiums because of higher claim payouts.  The premiums are the same for all age groups, and there are no pre-existing condition exclusions because it's a group plan.

    Younger, healthier people leave the plan because they can't afford it; older, sicker people stay in the plan because it's the only way they can get coverage.  Middle-aged healthy people like me get screwed, since we know that the second we drop coverage, a major medical issue will pop up.

    9-11 changed everything? Well, Katrina changed it back.
