agreed that progressive taxation was a protection for a healthy economy and democracy... so not a fable or a feeble excuse to somehow punish rich people for their success.

Keeping the rich from becoming a super wealthy multi-generational ruling class that gobbles up control of more and more of the assets, wealth and control is the only rational course for a society... and that includes estate taxes on the exceedingly wealthy.

And for those who cannot understand it is simply that over a certain threshold money rewrites the rules of any society to suit itself... there is no bargaining of equals any longer there is mostly just dictation of terms of economic surrender by the wealthy few to the rest instead of a grudging agreement to a sustainable balance between incentives and share in the returns of the investments with LABOR valued and rewarded to a degree that keeps an economy from stagnating in either direction.

Any bargain that leaves all parties to the deal somewhat dissatisfied is likely to be the fairest. But super rich who are aggressive and highly motivated will always use their advantages to add more leverage incrementally until they inevitably control all the decision making. If they are dissatisfied with a bargain they have much more potential power to ensure they get much closer to "satisfied" and the problem is there are those among them who will never be happy even if they get EVERYTHING that they want... this process is self correcting of course if you call social collapse due to widespread poverty and lack of social mobility leading to some sort of revolution a "correction"...

And of course the most successful Oligarchies can defer the reckoning by setting up the right police state / Theocracy /Aristocracy / Dictatorship (of the left or the right)... so not all that self correcting. Far better to avoid years, decades or more of needless suffering and misery in the first place even if it makes the very rich has a sad...
