  •  America was NEVER a true democracy. (5+ / 0-)

An actual Democracy is a nation with the "one woman, one vote" election system.

The United States of America is, and always has been, a democratic Republic of sovereign States, with a central Federal Government.

    Article I, Sections 2 & 3

Section 2: US Representatives are directly elected by their constitutents (direct democracy, one woman=one vote).

Section 3: US Senators are elected by the Legislature of their State. This was the Law of the Land until 1913, when Amendment 17 changed that to "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state, elected by the people thereof"

Our Presidential elections however, remain unDemocratic, in that our Electoral College votes are the only ones that are counted when decided whom we have chosen as President. Most definitely NOT a democratic vote.

More Americans might know and understand the true nature of our Government and elected officials if we still taught CIVICS in our public schools.

I had a Civics class in high school (late 80's), and even that watered-down crap was better than the informational void we have now.

    •  Well there never has been a country with it yet (0+ / 0-)

Democracy has to move to representative democracy once a group of people moves beyond village or very small sized town... So we are then reduced to arguing over what compromise is the best that makes a system as close to "democracy" as possible... and even what the definition of that is.

ALL nations that are labeled as being some sort of democracy are very clumsy compromises... so is the US one of the worst... has it always been imperfect...

well.... YEAH... but for some that is hard to take... they went from the shiny USA myth they learned in their youth to rude awakening and utter disillusionment and like a kid who learns about Santa in a hard way they end up hating Christmas... some just can never like the US much after finding the skeletons and the hidden political addictions and malfunctions... like rejecting a flawed relative with substance abuse issues.

But realists can love the "alcoholic" and work on making things a bit more sober and workable.
