And with a three month stay in the hospital, I'm sure she's far beyond it.

      •  If she was a student...and a rock climber(?) (0+ / 0-)

why wasn't she added to parents policy per ACA?

It's not really a good idea to drop your insurance right before you do something recreational that can lead to serious injuries.

Would you drop your auto insurance before a long road trip?

are under 26. Nor do we necessarily have parents who are eligible to add us to their insurance policies.

I'm 29 and a full-time student. My dad would gladly have added me when the ACA came into effect, except that (1) I'm over 26, and (2) even if i'd been young enough, he's actually my stepfather. I have no legal parent in the US.

not every student's parents have good insurance themselves. There are lots and lots of first-generation college students in the US.

student debt and other bills, doing it all herself, because her parents are dysfunctional.  A brilliant and talented woman and yes she made one dumb decision...like so many young people do.

insurance. Which is what makes the 'hit by a bus' scenario a canard (again). No insurance would cover 3 months hospital stay or in the case of my uncle 6 months.
