Should they have been surprised at the outcome - did they doubt it was a possibility?

but hoped it wouldn't.  Being an Air Traffic Controller is a very specific job requiring lots of training as well as a lengthy supervised internship.  They felt secure that the whole lot of them couldn't be replaced that easily.

These were middle aged mostly Republican men who saw their union more as a professional organization than a labor union.  Until they were without a contract for a long time, federal authorities refused to bargain a new one, and work rules started to be arbitrarily imposed.

They talked to all of us on the picket line about the long road to the strike.  None of them wanted to strike, but they felt there was no other option open to them after everything else failed.  These guys weren't big labor supporters or activists and saw themselves as highly trained professionals.   They couldn't believe what was happening to them.

Frankly, that's when I stopped flying.  I saw it as unsafe with a bunch of new air traffic controlled rushed through training.  And we have Saint Ronnie to thank for that.  He treated them like janitors who could be easily replaced.

There already is class warfare in America. Unfortunately, the rich are winning.
