    •  I think I've been on the edge of this for a while. (4+ / 0-)

And pardon if this is rambling, but...

What I mean by that having been on the edge of this for some time is how so many on the extreme right where religion is concerned claim this or that right is under attack. (i.e. the war on religion).

It seems we (they) have lost sight of the rights we do have vs, the rights as outlined by those who want to claim they are being persecuted. Inside their claim is the belief that they should be able to instill their belief system on others and if they can not, then they are somehow persecuted and not respected because they can not 'persecute' others for not believing what they do and what they believe are proper tenants and rules for living.

They're free to believe whatever they want and no one is trying to change that. What they have a problem with is that not enough people pay lip service to their way of thinking and somehow, that lack of 'respect' gets convoluted into them thinking that this is about a lack of respect for what they believe.

What they usually fail to see if they are not respecting others rights to believe as they choose. In their pursuit for personal religious liberty, they have whole-heartedly decided what is right for them is right for all and that respect for others rights is not required by them, but respect for what they believe should be required by everyone else.

I think it goes back to authoritarian conditioning and how they perceive their rights, vs. the rights of others.

non personal use if the word you follows...
I may support your right to believe in little pink elephants that come to visit when people get drunk. I support your right. I do not have to believe what you believe, nor am I required to respect that belief, or the system on which you base it. Just because one supports another's right to say or to believe, does not mean one must support what is said, or believed.

Then we come to the word belief... and that word gets muddled with science. As many believer's try to say atheism is a religion or a 'belief system' of its own, so to do they try to discredit known fact as simply an equivalent way of thinking when it is they who try to use false equivalency to equalize their supposed thinking to rationalize their fiction into fact.
