I note that in many cases around the world - Chile, Argentina - it fell to a government subsequent to the one that succeeded the autocrats to prosecute said autocrats.

See, if the autocrats know the next administration will justly prosecute them, they won't peacefully surrender power. But the next administration has no such qualms regarding the 3rd administration, so it's in the 3rd (or 4th) generation that the prosecutions come.

We would like to think that we are better than that. I think we once were. That was then; this is now. A country which tolerates, nay celebrates, such men in office is not a country where they can be prosecuted without great difficulty.

This does not excuse Obama and Holder; it does give one hope for the winner in 2016.

And as a further silver lining, Dick Cheney's new heart means he will likely be around to face the music if it is played in 2017.

    •  I was also disappointed that the Obama ..... (4+ / 0-)

Administration did not go after the various Wall Street banking firms.  The torturers did immense damage to our reputation overseas, as well as attacking both guilty and innocent alike and acting in a totally immoral manner, and the banking firms drove many innocent people into bankruptcy, while stealing everything that could lay their hands on. All of these people should be wearing orange jump suits now.  However I'm also aware that there may be more to this than meets the eye.  is it possible that Obama was under some sort of pressure not to prosecute either?  I simply don't know as I have no access to what happens behind closed doors.  No conspiracy theory here- I just don't have all the facts. As you say autocrats don't want to go to jail and that in itself may be enough, especially for an African-American even middle of the road Democrat  to  think hard about.

What choices do we have now?  We either vote for Obama, who is certainly imperfect but 100% better than ANY of the Republicans or we elect a government that will take us back in time, but have all the modern weapons at their disposal to create a really dystopian world.
